About

New York Harbor Foundation's mission is to improve the access to, awareness and education about, and condition of New York Harbor.

They lead the Billion Oyster Project (www.bop.nyc), a large-scale marine restoration effort to restore one billion live oysters to New York Harbor by 2035. The Foundation currently uses oyster restoration as a vehicle to teach New York City students and the general public about their local marine environment.

Their lead educational partner in New York City is the New York Harbor School (“Harbor School”), a maritime public high school located on Governors Island in New York Harbor offering career and technical education (“CTE”) programs in marine science and technology. Students in Harbor School’s CTE programs are active participants in BOP.

New York Harbor Foundation was launched in September 2010 to help the Harbor School capitalize on the unique learning opportunities its new island location offered. The Foundation creates, funds and manages maritime, environmental and college-focused programs for Harbor School students.

Additionally, the Harbor Foundation seeks to engage all visitors to Governors Island, particularly young people, in the education, research and restoration of New York Harbor.
