Nexen is active in the recovery and development of shale gas, with significant land holdings in northeast British Columbia as well as shale oil/gas production in the United States.

Nexen operates the Long Lake oil sands facility, including steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) production. In addition, they have other operated and non-operated interests in northeastern Alberta.
