Oceana, founded in 2001, is the largest international organization focused solely on ocean conservation. Oceana campaigns to protect and restore the world's oceans. Our team of marine scientists, economists, lawyers and advocates win specific and concrete policy changes to reduce pollution and to prevent the irreversible collapse of fish populations, marine mammals and other sea life.
Oceana seeks to make our oceans as rich, healthy and abundant as they once were. We look to a future in which dolphin sightings are common along any temperate coast; in which mighty marlins, sharks and tuna are abundant once again; in which whales and sea turtles thrive, cod are plentiful on both sides of the Atlantic, local fishing cultures thrive rather than decline and in which fish are a safe, growing and plentiful source of food around the world.
What We Do
Oceana was created to identify practical solutions and make them happen. The good news is that we can restore our oceans to their former glory. In many cases, laws governing fishing and pollution already exist – we simply need to enforce them and ensure that management and industry obey a few commonsense principles.
To most effectively protect the world’s oceans, Oceana is:
Marine-focused: Oceana is 100 percent dedicated to fighting on behalf of oceans.
Global: We have campaign offices in North America, South America, Central America and Europe.
Campaign-driven: We channel our resources towards a limited number of strategic, directed campaigns to achieve measurable outcomes that will help return our oceans to former levels of abundance. Some of our campaigns are regional, others are international.
Fact-based: We believe in the importance of science in identifying problems and solutions.
