OK Tedi Development Foundation
About

Ok Tedi Development Foundation is the legal entity that manages community development benefits from Ok Tedi mine operations on behalf of the 100,000 river residents living in 156 villages throughout Western Province.

Trading as Ok Tedi Fly River Development Program (OTFRDP) since 2010, the entity is a dynamic, rapidly expanding organisation that delivers projects and programs to communities through a unique partnership between mining, the people and the government. OTFRDP is mandated to ensure wise and sustainable use of the wealth created from mining operations for the future generations. That is something OTDF takes very seriously.

OTDF is guided by a Board that includes four Associate Directors that represent each of the three community partner regions and a women’s representative. The Associate Directors ensure the development decisions of our community partner regions are heard. The community comprises a strong women’s representation from the eight Women Community Trusts living within the river communities.

The State’s Mineral Policy and Geo-Hazard Management Department, the PNG Sustainable Development Program Ltd and the Ok Tedi Mining Ltd have partnered with OTDF for the benefit of all the river communities.

The OTDF team is made up of more than 70 employees both fulltime and contractors from varying ethnic groups within Papua New Guinea coming together to deliver much-needed help to the people of Western Province.

Our Vision: To ensure self sustainability and improve the quality of life of all Western Province communities.

Our Mission: Committed to best practice and wise management of funds and programs with emphasis on accountability, transparency, performance and equal participation in order to realise the development aspirations of our community partners.

Issues

Across the three regions in Western Province PNG near the Ok Tedi Fly River, OTDF carries out self-sustainable projects to address a variety of crucial issues for local villagers.

  • Growing Beyond Food Security - Supplying of garden staples like sago, taro, banana, yam, dryland rice and cassava to supplement what protein sources the people can catch or hunt.
  • Education Infrastructure - Many schools in Papua New Guinea do not have proper classrooms and/or teachers houses which reflect directly on the poor teacher retention being experienced.
  • Pampenai Road Rehabilitation - The Pampenai Road is a former 15 kilometer stretch of road linking six villages which have large stands of mature rubber trees in the North Fly district.
  • Inadequate Health Centers and aid posts - A lack of fully functional health centres and aid posts in Western Province is a major contributor to many rural people still not receiving the most basic of health services.
