About

Peace Winds Japan (PWJ) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to the support of people in distress, and threatened by conflict, poverty, or other turmoil. With its headquarters in Japan, PWJ is operational in many parts of the world.

Vision

The world where people can live without threat of disputes and poverty, full of hope and respect for one another.

Mission

  • - They conduct rapid and emergency humanitarian activities to help people whose lives are threatened bydisputes and natural disasters.
  • - They provide support for rehabilitation and development of the community where many suffer from destruction of social foundation, by aiming at self-help (empowerment) of the local people.
  • - They give take effort in prevention and resolution of disputes through our support activities in the local community.
  • - They emit information on local needs for support, and arouse interests of general citizens.
  • - They make proposals to increase effectiveness of system for relief activities in order to improve the system.

What they do

With the motto of “providing the necessary support to people in need,” PWJ carries out its diverse activities across national boundaries. whether in support of refugees who have fled their homes, or internally-displaced people suffering in their own countries: PWJ provides support. From victims of natural disasters, to poverty-stricken communities; or for any people in distress regardless of their ethnic background, political stance, or religious faith: Peace Winds Japan is there.

Their assistance activities are two-fold:

  • - emergency humanitarian assistance and disaster relief activities aiming to safeguard people’s lives and meet their basic human needs; and 
  • - reconstruction and development assistance for the regeneration of self-sustaining livelihoods. 

In Japan, PWJ also engages in advocacy activities to raise the awareness of the general public about the various humanitarian situations in which PWJ operates.

PWJ gratefully acknowledges the many types of support from:

  • volunteers who contribute their valuable time and skills at our offices and special events in Japan;
  • corporate supporters with numerous important in-kind contributions;
  • PWJ’s friends and families who understand and share their value by providing the moral support.

Financially, PWJ is supported by membership fees, donations from individuals, businesses and partner organizations, as well as by grants from government institutions, international organizations, and various foundations. PWJ strives to leverage all the resources we receive in the most efficient and effective way to create the greatest impact to improve the lives and well-being of the people and communities they assist.

Projects and Activities

Peace Winds Japan is engaged in emergency humanitarian relief as well as reconstruction and development assistance all over the world. See below a summary of our current projects and activities around the world (as of February 1, 2013). PWJ also carries out short-term humanitarian aid projects in emergency situations.
