Port Autonome de Papeete (Autonomous Port of Papeete) (PAP)
HISTORY
Since 1962, this economic lung of French Polynesia, a link with the outside world, has been a public establishment which is constantly developing, in step with the evolution of its various types of traffic.
It was not until the inauguration of the Tahiti-Faa'a airport and the arrival of the Pacific Experimentation Center (CEP) in 1962 that French Polynesia really emerged from its isolation. Indeed, the decision to establish the CEP in Moruroa and the need for the military authorities to have a perfectly equipped naval rear base in Tahiti were at the origin of the economic development of the Country and the current extension of the Port of Papeete.
The public establishment "Port Autonome de Papeete" was then created on January 5, 1962 to respond to the growth in maritime traffic and to implement major works: extension of the naval base, construction of the protective dike on the reef over 2.2 km long and 5 m high, backfilling of the islet of Motu Uta and the long-distance quay. This extension phase lasted nearly four years to end with the inauguration of the new Port of Papeete on June 29, 1966, in the presence of General BILLOTTE, then Minister of French Overseas Territories. It made it possible to increase the total length of the quays from 300 to 1,100 meters, the surface area of the platforms from 4,000 to 50,000 m² and the storage areas from 10,000 to 22,500 m². The total cost of the works amounted to 1.086 billion XPF, of which 931 million was paid for by the State, 55 million by the Territory and 100 million by the Autonomous Port of Papeete. Since that date, the latter has been continuously extended. Thus, all of the exploitable sites have been used or are in use.
