The Instituto Prensa y Sociedad, based in Lima, Peru, is a civil organization that promotes investigative journalism, freedom of expression, and access to public information in Latin America.
The IPYS emerged in Peru in 1993 as a reaction to the authoritarian rule of Alberto Fujimori, who cut democratic freedoms. The first partners were prominent publishers in the country. He organized a network for the protection of journalists in danger and influenced the birth of others in Latin America. For his work in the region, that year the International Press Institute (IPI) honored him with the Pioneer of Press Freedom award. Later, he developed initiatives to promote investigative journalism, including the Latin American Investigative Journalism Award, which has been held since 2002, in partnership with Transparency International and the Latin American Conference on Investigative Journalism (COLPIN) which takes place every year in different cities of the region.
IPYS is interested in promoting free journalism and high professional standards so that society has a plural and quality information. In this way, citizens will be able to adequately exercise their civil, political, and economic rights. In that sense:
