The Estrada Nova Basin Sanitation Program, as its name indicates, is the municipal sanitation program, with the objective of contributing to solve the socio-environmental problems that affect the inhabitants of the Estrada Nova de Belém River Basin. This is a program of works and actions with public resources of the Municipality of Belém and partially financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
Of the 13 watersheds in Belém, the Estrada Nova Basin is considered to be one of the five most critical basins, where frequent flooding floods more than 35% of the area. It is also the most populated, with about 220,000 inhabitants (Census 2005). Five thousand (5,000) families are located in the previously mentioned flood areas.
In view of the situation of precarious sanitation, where water and garbage are thrown directly into the canals, and the electricity and drinking water services are equally deficient, the Municipality of Belém has sought to counteract this reality to counter this scenario through the continuity of works of the Estrada Nova River Basin Sanitation Program - PROMABEN.
