Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS)
About

Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS) is a UK-based charity/social enterprise hybrid with an innovative school financing model, Smart Aid, that is sustainably expanding access to quality, low-cost secondary education in Uganda and Zambia. Due to a severe lack of affordable schooling in either of these countries, the vast majority of young people are unable to access secondary education.

With a mission ‘to unlock the potential of Africa by delivering equal access to affordable, quality secondary education’, PEAS is addressing this desperate need for quality secondary education provision. The organization has grown rapidly from 2 schools in Uganda in 2008 to 22 schools in Uganda and Zambia in 2012.

The 2012-2017 Strategic Plan sets out ambitious targets for PEAS. Among the headline goals is the intention to build 100 sustainable secondary schools in Uganda by 2017, educating 100,000 young people, and making these schools the best low-cost schools in the country. By working with the government through a Public Private Partnership, PEAS is already delivering education at a lower cost to the individual student while achieving above average national results in national exams. To ensure a rounded education for the students, PEAS supplements the national curriculum with a Citizenship Education Curriculum in addition to linking the core subjects to the schools’ income-generating activities.
