Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA)
About

PHSA has a unique role in BC's health authority system: to ensure that BC residents have access to a coordinated provincial network of high-quality specialized health-care services.

PHSA works in partnership with the province's health authorities and health-care professionals to improve access to evidence-informed practice closer to where people live and to effectively promote health, manage chronic conditions and reduce the burden of illness.

From conducting ground-breaking research to training tomorrow's professionals, to setting province-wide standards, to providing top-notch, compassionate patient care, our leaders, health professionals and staff consistently seek system-wide improvements with an emphasis on prevention, health promotion and protection.

Agencies, services and programs
PHSA operates provincial agencies that provide care and services through specialized hospitals and centres, such as BC Children's Hospital and the BC Cancer Agency.

They are also responsible for specialized provincial health services, which are delivered across the province in collaboration with regional health authorities, such as cardiac, trauma, perinatal and stroke services. Through BC Emergency Health Services, PHSA oversees the BC Ambulance Service and Patient Transfer Network.

Planning and evaluating services
By planning, coordinating and evaluating specialized health services, PHSA is working with the other health authorities across BC to provide equitable and cost-effective health care for people who need provincial services like cancer treatment, management of a complex mental health problem or cardiac care.

Striving for efficiency
PHSA is driven to deliver the best possible value by providing optimal quality of services to the people we serve at the optimal cost to taxpayers. As part of this mandate, PHSA, along with the regional health authorities, are members of the Health Shared Services BC (HSSBC).

HSSBC seeks to reduce the cost of corporate services and gain efficiencies through consolidation, streamlining and implementation of alternative models such as sharing services with other health authorities.
