WHAT THEY DO
In today's world, information concerning their planet is being generated at a pace far exceeding their ability to thoroughly process and digest it. From satellite sensors and imagery to the flow of water running in a local stream, Riverside Technology, inc. helps organizations collect, analyze, manage, and disseminate this overload of environmental information, allowing managers and policy makers to make decisions. The data gathered can vary from historical climate information to real-time data of snowpack; however, the analysis of which information to distribute and how to present it can mean the difference between the right decision and a catastrophe. Riverside develops innovative IT systems, tools and methods bringing this information from our natural resources, through computer models and into decision support systems enabling managers to protect, manage and preserve human life and property.
Services
Riverside performs a variety of services that transcend the flow of information from data collection to data dissemination. Their clients have needs in every aspect of the information lifecycle and our goal remains to be the solution provider enabling our clients to have the tools and information to make the right decisions. These services can be providing state-of-the-art hydrologic forecasting systems to providing IT support for federal programs at agencies such as NOAA and the USGS.

APPLICATIONS
Agriculture & Irrigation
Their experience in irrigation system diagnostic analyses and implementation of improved irrigation management strategies, lead directly to improved irrigation water management practices. They have provided technical assistance for main and on-farm irrigation rehabilitation, improved irrigation operations and maintenance (O&M), water quality, and related soil and land quality assessments. Riverside staff and associates have undertaken both short-term and long-term studies of irrigation systems, focusing on main system operations and maintenance activities, on-farm water management practices, farmers' cropping practices, the macro and micro-economic aspects of irrigation and cropping systems, and institutional/organizational arrangements for effectively managing and controlling irrigation water.
Climate Change
Changes in the climate have had an effect on all regions of the world. With populations increasing especially along coastlines, these areas are particularly vulnerable to property damage and loss of life. Riverside is managing active, on-going projects focusing on potential hydrologic impacts due to climate change. These projects include assessing possible changes in the timing and volume of hydrologic runoff that might be expected from climate change scenarios, and using calibrated hydrologic models to estimate the change in runoff. Riverside has also been selected by NOAA to develop a climate change decision support system that will enable Colorado water managers to assess the impact of predicted climate change.
Emergency Management & Natural Hazards Monitoring
Mitigating damages, especially loss of life, as a result of a natural disaster is an issue of major concern worldwide. Riverside uses state of the art hydrologic and hydraulic models, real-time satellite imagery, and high resolution digital elevation models to support natural disaster management and disaster preparedness projects. Riverside is particularly well-versed in 21st-Century tools for flood forecasting and inundation mapping. Used by emergency managers, floodplain managers, and water supply organizations, these disaster preparedness tools are valuable for predication and analysis of areas of inundation, as well as providing timely information needed to support disaster preparedness agencies. Riverside has also developed and provided the tools necessary to prepare communities for such disasters by establishing methods to communicate early notification of disasters. In Bangladesh, for instance, Riverside helped establish effective and culturally relevant methods to disseminate warning messages to the village level regarding floodplain levels.
Energy & Hydropower
As energy demands continue to grow, Riverside utilizes its experience in building decision support systems and forecasting tools specifically for the energy market. The growth in developing new renewable energy sources has led to energy providers looking for more efficient ways to improve and/or build new sources. Maximizing power production and analyzing water supply have provided hydropower producers an added advantage in continuing to improve production efficiencies. Today, mining, oil and gas companies are developing new extraction methods that increase the use of water, the importance of analyzing water quality, and the dispersion of used water.
Hydrologic Forecasting
Riverside offers a proven combination of technical capabilities and project experience in real-time hydrologic forecasting, optimization, and database services. They maintain a complete, up-to-date inventory of hydrologic software models, including models from the National Weather Service and the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Riverside also develops customized software meeting specific additional client requirements as needed for hydrologic analysis, streamflow forecasting, and operations management. Riverside's expertise includes the design and implementation of real-time database systems for its forecast systems. The database is the central hydrologic forecasting system component providing hydrologic data from the data collection network to the other components of the forecasting system.
Information Technology
Riverside's information technology and management capabilities range from real-time hydrometeorological data network design and instrumentation, data communications and database management systems, and system integration, to flood forecasting and flood inundation mapping for disaster management, geospatial information systems (including geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies), and Decision Support Systems, including dissemination of data, analysis, and flood warning information via the Internet for policy and decision makers, and the general public.
Land Use
The impact of properly utilizing land is key and critical to the environment and involves many characteristics. To appropriately plan for land usage, knowledge of the area, policies, historical information and future demands all come into play. Riverside staff continues working with various organizations and local communities on land use issues. Some of their activities in this area includes studies of past, present and future land use demands, urban irrigation monitoring, and using GIS to collect and analyze data for planning.
Satellite Instrumentation
Monitoring worldwide impacts of climate change and natural hazards, and studying natural resource degradation, require obtaining data via satellites. Through processing satellite data, observers can, for example, properly warn agencies of a potentially disastrous situation mitigating damages. Riverside utilizes satellite instrumentation to obtain real-time field data and disseminate that information to local, state, national and international agencies. A long time partner of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Riverside is currently under contract on several NOAA programs utilizing satellite data.
Water Management
Riverside develops customized, integrated system solutions for complex issues of water resources management. Focusing on complete solutions, Riverside's water resources management services and capabilities range from river basin planning; real-time hydrologic modeling and forecasting; and reservoir, water rights, and irrigation modeling, optimization, and operations; to designing, developing, and implementing innovative Decision Support Systems (DSS) for integrated water resources management. Riverside's DSSs give organizations a high-technology edge in forecasting and controlling their most valuable natural resource.
