Rodrigues Regional Assembly
Rodrigues Regional Assembly
About

The Rodrigues Regional Assembly, established under the Rodrigues Regional Assembly Act of 2001, plays a crucial role in governing the Rodrigues region, which is an autonomous territory within the Republic of Mauritius. Here are some key points about the Assembly:

  • Establishment: The Assembly Act was signed into law on 20 November 2001, and the Assembly held its inaugural session on 12 October 2002.
  • Meetings: The Assembly typically convenes on Tuesdays to conduct its business, but may also meet on other days if necessary. Tuesdays are particularly designated for setting questions to Commissioners regarding matters within their jurisdiction.
  • Composition: The Assembly consists of seventeen members, including twelve Local Region Members representing six Local Regions and five Island Region Members. Presently, the "Organisation du Peuple Rodriguais" (OPR) holds a majority with ten members, while the Minority party (Mouvement Rodriguais) has seven members. The Chief Commissioner is Mr. Louis Serge CLAIR, G.C.S.K, and the Minority Leader is Mr. Nicolas Vonmally.
  • Powers and Responsibilities: The Assembly has the authority to enact Regulations on matters within its jurisdiction and can propose legislation, although such legislation must be approved by the National Assembly to become law for Rodrigues. The Assembly also prepares and adopts its annual budgetary estimates, which are reviewed by the Cabinet of Ministers before being included in the National Appropriation Bill.
  • Interaction with Mainland: To ensure efficient governance despite geographical distance, regular interaction between the Rodrigues Regional Assembly, led by the Chief Commissioner, and the Prime Minister is facilitated by law. Commissioners are also encouraged to consult relevant Ministers on the mainland as needed.
  • Decentralization: The decentralization of decision-making power to Rodrigues has been progressing well, indicating a positive outlook for both the Republic and Rodrigues. This decentralization aims to empower Rodrigues in its governance and development processes.
