The Metropolitan Company of São Paulo - Metrô was incorporated on April 24, 1968. It is controlled by the Government of the State of São Paulo under the management of the Metropolitan Transportation State Secretariat (STM). It is responsible for the operation and expansion of the subway network and the planning of metropolitan passenger transportation of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo.

The subway network of the city of São Paulo is composed of 6 lines, totaling 96 km of extension and 85 stations. It is integrated with the CPTM in the Luz, Tamanduateí, Brás, Palmeiras-Barra Funda, Tatuapé, Corinthians-Itaquera, Pinheiros and Santo Amaro stations and the other modes of transportation in the city of São Paulo.

The São Paulo Metro is responsible for the operation of the 1-Azul (Jabaquara-Tucuruvi), 2-Verde (Vila Prudente - Vila Madalena), 3-Vermelha (Corinthians-Itaquera - Palmeiras-Barra Funda) and Monorail Line 15 -Prata (Vila Prudente - Vila União), totaling 64.7 km and 58 stations.

The 4-Yellow Line has been operated by Via Quatro under PPP since 2010. It has 11.4 km of extension and 10 stations.

The Line 5-Lilac has to be operated under concession by Via Mobility on August 04, 2018. It has 20 km and 17 stations.

In 2017, the subway network reached the mark of 1.3 billion passengers transported, with the São Paulo subway being responsible for transporting 1.1 billion passengers, standing out worldwide for the results obtained in the production and quality of the public passenger transport on rails.
