Save the Children is a non-governmental organization that defends and promotes the rights of the child in Romania since 1990.
For 28 years they have been developing educational, social protection and children's rights programs, gaining nationally recognized expertise, not least the organization's projects being taken over and developed as examples of good practice.
On April 20, 1990 , on the Save the Children Sweden initiative, Save the Children Romania is set up , with the immediate objectives of providing emergency aid to children in orphanages in a dramatic situation. The constant support of their Swedish colleagues proves to be of paramount importance in the development of their organization in the next decades of existence.
Save the Children Romania has been a pioneer in ensuring rights for the most vulnerable children. Thus, it has set up the first services to prevent child abandonment, family support for children abandoned with HIV / AIDS, improve the quality of life in children's homes, protect street children, support for children who are victims of sexual abuse, or trafficking in human beings.
Since 1998, Save the Children Romania is a full member of Save the Children , the largest independent organization in the world that promotes the rights of the child, comprising 30 members and conducting programs in over 120 countries.
In recent years, Save the Children Romania has contributed uniquely to promoting positive discipline, educating parents and working with children in the right way to communicate with them, banning by law the beatings and humiliating treatments of children, and last but not least to change the public opinion mentality on the rights of the child.
In their work they have promoted children's rights among children, working with educational institutions to increase their knowledge and application.
They are glad to recognize the central and local authorities and civil society for their contribution to improving the legislative framework on the protection and promotion of children's rights, translating practical experience into national strategic materials that benefit as many children as possible.
In over 28 years of work, over 1,750,000 children have been involved in Salvati Children's programs and campaigns. The organization has branches in 11 counties (Arges, Caraş-Severin, Constanţa, Dolj, Hunedoara, Iaşi, Mureş, Neamţ, Suceava, Timiş, Vaslui), over 6,000 members and 2,000 active volunteers. In 2017 they included 251,318 children, 27,945 teachers, social workers, other specialists and 46,542 parents in education, protection and information programs.
They are currently running projects targeting the three major priorities of the organization: reducing infant mortality , facilitating access to quality education for children from vulnerable communities, and protecting children from all forms of violence , neglect or abuse, including those children left alone at home economic migration of parents.
