SEDESOL tries to mitigate the extreme poverty provoked by the imperfections of the market.

It is a fundamental part of the Estartegía of the current "Better Living" government to counter the most important problems in the fight against poverty derived from the global crisis of 2008.

General objectives: 

1. Design and conduct the policy of social development programs and actions of this arising affect comprehensive and effectively in combating poverty and operate within a legal framework that allows transparency, accountability and evaluation of results.
2. Develop and implement programs and actions to address poverty, vulnerability and social exclusion for the most vulnerable sectors effective fulfillment of their social care policies promoting differentiated according to their needs.
3. Strengthen social cohesion by promoting social and community participation to develop links that help to create an inclusive, egalitarian, supportive and involved in the processes of planning, implementation and monitoring of policies and actions of social development society.
4. Promote economic welfare through the implementation and coordination of strategies that generate increase and strengthen productive activities for the most vulnerable social sectors, enabling them to generate better income to overcome their condition of poverty and marginalization.
5. Contribute to strengthening the institutional capacities of state and local governments and organizations of civil society through the generation and transfer of knowledge, the development of joint schemes attention to the most vulnerable sectors and coordination of actions .
6. Develop and implement organizational policies that allow to have sufficient material resources, have trained human resources and link the needs of social policy and the most vulnerable social sectors with the programming and budgeting, for efficient and effective development of actions from the sector.
