About

The Small Grant Program in Indonesia (SGP Indonesia) is a collaborative program between the ASEAN Center for Biodiversity (ACB) and the Government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) in the form of a Small Grant Program that includes biodiversity and livelihood conservation programs. This cooperation is contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MSP) signed by MoEF cq. ASOEN Chair Indonesia together with the ACB Executive Director dated May 21, 2015 in Jakarta with the Implementing Agency is The Directorate of Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems. Funding support for this program was obtained from the German Government through the German Financial Cooperation / KfW (BMZ No. 2011 66545).

In Indonesia, Penabulu Foundation as Service Provider is contracted by ACB provide handholding assistance/service to small and micro grants.  Penabulu as Service Provider will coordinate with MoEF c.q. Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystems c.q. Directorate of Biodiversity Conservation through the mechanism of the National Steering Committee (NSC) and the National Working Team (NWT).

Through the Penabulu Foundation, SGP Indonesia will provide financial support in the form of Small Grants and Micro Grants for the ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHPs) conservation project in Indonesia, namely Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) and Way Kambas National Park (WKNP).

Objectives

Objectives SGP Indonesia Programme are:

- To enhance biodiversity protection in line with the interests of local populations that are directly dependent on specific AHPs and adjacent areas;
- To improve the livelihoods of people who are directly dependent on resources in and around AHP; and
- To strengthen the role of ACB in promoting biodiversity protection among ASEAN member states.
SGP Indonesia’s support is aimed at civil society in carrying out activities aimed at increasing local participation, strengthening law enforcement, and linking habitat management with efforts to sustainably use of biodiversity.

The Programme’s Support is expected to be able to overcome the main problems that were identified at the time of the CMP preparation in the two AHPs, such as:

- Aligning national park management with economic development in the local administrative area;
- A large gap in national park financing;
- Land conversion in the buffer zone;
- Limiting opportunities for sustainable use;
- Loss of species due to illegal activities; and
- Preservation of superior species.
