Established over 40 years ago SMC NIRAS Consultants is a Thai company based in Bangkok, providing a comprehensive range of consultant civil and structural engineering services to both the private and public sectors.
Services:
Ports and Marine
Their great strength has always been in maritime works, having played an important role in the development of many of the ports, both public and private, in Thailand. As well as being involved in the initial implementation, SMC has followed several of these port and harbour projects through subsequent stages of expansion. Although most of their work has been in Thailand, they have also carried out projects in Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. Further afield and through their partnership with Niras this portfolio of work in ports, marine and coastal projects extends into Indonesia, Africa, the Middle East, Scandinavia and the UK.
Infrastructure
Collectively they have undertaken planning and engineering for roads, bridges and mass transit. In Bangkok Thailand SMC has played key roles in the design of the first phases of both the BTS overhead and the MRT underground systems: namely the MRT Blue Line South comprised of 9 stations over 11 kilometres and subsequently the Blue Line Extension Contract 1; and preliminary design of the first stage of the BTS and subsequently 2 stations of the Silom Line.
In Europe NIRAS has experience in a variety of transport infrastructure projects from light rail, which is a key element in the transport network in Denmark, roads and road bridges for main trunk roads in Denmark and Norway as well as medium-sized airports.
Buildings
Combined they have strong engineering design capability in a variety of building structures, ranging from low-rise wide-span to high-rise; from reinforced concrete and pre-cast concrete to steel structures; from logistics warehouses and buildings for industry to retail complexes, resorts and hotels to sports arenas. Some of the clients in Thailand for whom they have provided building design services are: Italian-Thai Development (ITD), Kerry Logistics Thailand, Gulf JP, Centara Hotels and Resorts and The Central Group.
Sustainable Energy
Sustainable development and climate change have been enshrined in UN policy as goals for development and through NIRAS they can provide strategic energy planning based on these goals. This covers several areas and phases of renewable energy from supply and production to distribution pIn parallel they are able to offer services in planning and design aimed at CO2 reduction and climate policies: leveraging waste resources, energy symbioses and the circular economy. In the field of sustainable energy NIRAS has undertaken wind farms in the UK, France, Germany, Holland and Denmark as well as Taiwan.
Water Management
At the forefront of new water management technology and leakage reduction, NIRAS are involved in the reduction of leakage to the water network for Copenhagen, with Denmark being among the top in global rankings for lowest water loss levels. Client references include water management projects for Colombo Municipality, Sri Lanka; Al Ain Water and Electric Authority in Abu Dhabi; Oslo municipality, Norway and for Copenhagen Municipality, Denmark. Expertise also extends to drinking water: from groundwater mapping, water quality, and sustainable abstraction to establishing and renovating well fields and other water resources, waterworks, and pipe systems to strategic planning and documented drinking water safety. This also entails advising utilities in NRW management and minimising leakages utilising a NIRAS–led design tool LeakMan.
