Sogin is an Italian state-owned Company. It is responsible for the environmental decontamination of Italy's nuclear sites and for the management of radioactive waste generated by research, nuclear medicine and industrial activities. As a result, the safety of the Italian citizens, the safeguard of the environment and the protection of future generations will be ensured.
Sogin is undertaking the largest environmental decontamination in the history of Italy. It includes the decommissioning of nuclear installations thus returning to the communities land which is free fram any radiological restrictions.
In addition to the four nuclear power plants in Trino, Caorso, Latina and Garigliano and the FN plant in Bosco Marengo, Sogin also manages the decontamination of the former Enea research centres in Saluggia, Casaccia and Rotondella.
Sogin also responsible for the siting, building and operations of the Technology Park, that will encompass the National Repository of radioactive waste, a surface structure in which all radioactive waste will be kept in safety.
The company, wholly owned by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, operates within the strategic guidelines of the Italian Government.
Sogin has been operating since 2001. It became a Group in 2004 through the acquisition of the majority stake, 60%, of Nucleco SpA, the national operator responsible for collecting, conditioning and temporary storage of radioactive waste and sources from nuclear medicine and from scientific and technological research activities .
Sogin coordinates the activities foreseen in the agreement signed by the Italian Government with the Russian Federation within the Global Partnership programme. In particular, the agreement concerns the dismantling of Russian nuclear submarines and the disposal of radioactive waste in safe conditions.
The 1000 employees of the Group are selected and trained according to standards of excellence. They constitute the most highly skilled source of professional expertise in the management of radioactive waste and environmental decontamination of nuclear power plants.
