The National Electricity Company of Burkina (SONABEL) is a state-owned industrial and commercial company with a current capital of sixty-three billion three hundred and eight million two hundred and seventy (63,308,270,000) CFA Francs exclusively held by The Burkinabe State. It is under the supervision of three ministries, namely:
SONABEL is administered by a Board of Directors composed of nine (9) members and headed by a Director General. The highest decision-making body is the General Assembly of State Societies. A new organizational chart has been implemented since 2012 and subdivides SONABEL into eight central directorates.
The General Management is assisted by Technical Advisers and also includes Departments and related project units.
SONABEL produces, transports and distributes electrical energy throughout the national territory covering as of 30 June 2014 more than 204 localities. It has an Interconnected National Network (INN) linking the two main cities of Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, mini-networking networks connecting small towns and isolated centers.

Its capital, which was 46 billion CFA francs, has increased to 63,308,270,000 CFA francs since 15 July 2013. It Has its registered office in OUAGADOUGOU. In 1976 SONABEL was a Public Institution with an industrial and commercial character (EPIC). It has undergone numerous transformations both in terms of its financial structure (capital) and its denomination. It was successively called Energie of French West Africa ('ENERGIE AOF'), then the African Electricity Company (SAFELEC), then Voltaic Society of Electricity (VOLTELEC).
