About

The Soul City Institute for Health & Development Communication (SCI), an organization not for gain, is proud to be considered one of the world’s most influential social and behavioral change programs. To this end, they are chiefly focused on sharing information and affecting social norms, attitudes and practice for the better. Its mission is to increase the national and international market's usage and involvement in Soul City Institute for Health and Development Communication (IHDC) products and services.

Established in 1992, when South Africa was on the brink of democratic change, Soul City has remained a health promotion organization, subscribing to the principles of the World Health Organization’s Ottawa Charter. According to the charter, health is a product of a range of actions that include building an enabling environment, advocacy for healthy public policy, community action, developing personal skills and re-orientating health services towards the health promotion approach.

Capacity Strengthening and Training

This Soul City unit develops training material and training courses that empower individuals and communities to take effective action to protect and promote their health in relation to HIV and AIDS, alcohol and other social and health related issues.

These materials expand and sustain the impact of Soul City’s mass media work through high quality training and materials creating a deeper impact at community level. Their materials are distributed to hard to reach audiences in South Africa and the region. The materials are based on stories and are full colour with many pictures and illustrations to engage the trainees and link the materials to the Soul City series.

The Institute works with a number of NGO partner organisations and government structures at district levels that are based in the nine provinces in South Africa and trains master trainers from these organisations on how to use the Soul City materials to train in their own communities.

Social Justice

On the 11th of August 2016 Soul City Institute relaunched itself to become a Social Justice organisation that focusses on Young Women & Girls and the communities they live in. An organisation that is, a pillar of strength, support and hope for a new dawn. An organisation that ensures that young women & girls, have equal access to resources that enable them to self-actualise and reach their full potential and take their rightful place in society. Why Social Justice?

  • Despite legislative efforts, South Africa remains a patriacal society, where women have been discriminated against, from disenfranchisement to various forms of abuse. The oppression of women has also been promoted by cultures, social system’s and religion.
  • In South Africa discrimination against women was also compounded by the apartheid system, which resulted in triple oppresion for black women in terms of race, gender and class or other factors.
