SHIS is a registered voluntary social welfare organization for social action and economic development in an integrated manner. Spearheaded by Ms. Sabitri Pal and Mr. M. A. Wohab, SHIS has been offering yeomen's service to better the lot of the socially and economically weaker sections of the people of an unserved and underserved unreached areas of West Bengal. The group initiated social service programmes to help the distressed and to regain self-confidence and find new strength. To achieve these objectives, SHIS adopted a multipronged strategy of interactive human relation exercises, personal attention and counselling the target groups.

Activities of SHIS is spread over the districts of North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakhin Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Malda, Nadia, Murshidabad and West Midnapore, of West Bengal. Prime activities they carry on for the community are :

• - Comprehensive Eye Care services through its 50 bedded Eye Hospital
• - Basic Health and Diagnostic services through Mobile Medical Unit in the rural and remote areas of - Sunderbans
• - Mobile Boat Dispensary services for the marooned villages of Sunderbans
• - Institutional Delivery Centre / Community Delivery Centre
• - Basic Health and Diagnostic Clinics
• - Integrated Counseling and Testing Centre
• - General Education through Shishu Bikash Academy
• - Girl's Academy for underprivileged Girl Children
• - School for the Hearing Impaired (Deaf and Dumb School)
• - Arsenic Testing and Mitigation
• - Low Cost Sanitary Latrines
• - Women Empowerment through Self Help Group promotion
