SPANA - Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad
About

SPANA’s mission is to improve the welfare of working animals in the world’s poorest communities. They do this through treatment, training and teaching. They treat by providing free veterinary care when animals suffer or when emergencies strike. They train by building expertise among vets and promoting humane care by animal owners. They teach children to develop positive believes, respect and compassion towards animals.

For many travellers to the less developed parts of the world, it can still come as a shock to discover how reliant so many communities still are on animals.

Countless families across the world depend on horses, mules, donkeys, camels and oxen for their livelihoods – and sometimes even their lives. These hardworking animals are the backbone of many societies, yet their lives can be short and involve great suffering. Working day after day in extreme temperatures, often with poor harnessing, little food and no veterinary care when they are sick or injured, many working animals endure constant pain.

Their vision is a world where every working animal lives a life free from suffering and is treated with compassion.

SPANA works to ease suffering and promote compassion. They reach around the world to get help to animals wherever and whenever they are needed.
They do all this with no government funding, relying entirely on the kindness of those who share their vision of a world where working animals receive the care they deserve.
