Since its beginnings in 1951, Sproule has provided leading geological services to the oil and gas industry. Dr. John Campbell ("Cam") Sproule established the company to be a crucial participant in the rapidly growing exploration of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, and it has since continually adapted to the constant changes in oil and gas exploration and production.
Firmly established as a leader in the industry, Sproule has grown to be at the forefront of emerging plays while continuing to provide expert services in established plays. Within the company, our specialized teams handle the intricacies of each project, ensuring expert opinions in every case. The company’s reputation is built on individual strengths uniting to provide trusted advice to every client.
Cam Sproule began the consultancy with a small team of geologists to explore the potential of Alberta’s resources. By the end of the 1950s, the company offered reserves evaluations, land evaluations, production forecasts, company evaluations, field reserve studies, gas engineering, geological evaluations of lands and reserves, surface exploration and photogeological surveys.
What gave Sproule its advantage over competitors, though, was its unrivaled library of aerial geological photographs. Helicopter surveys of northern Alberta led to aerial surveys of the Arctic Islands, exposing some of the richest potential in Canada to an optimistic group of engineers and geologists keen to explore the country’s resources. Sproule established itself as a leader not only in surveying, but also in its ability to convert knowledge of an area into profitable conclusions. Cam Sproule was a leader in the exploration of the Canadian Arctic, believing not only that it held vast undiscovered resources, but also that it was an important and inhabitable part of Canada's landscape. Sproule's experience in the Northwest Territories meant that the company was prepared to be on the of the first to map and assess the geology of the Arctic Islands.
Their current team of over 100 employees continues to provide the expertise that established their solid reputation as trusted advisors. As they grow with the industry, they continually prove theirselves leaders in emerging technologies as well as established methods. Some of their specialized staff are heavily involved in regulatory administration, meaning that they are still as aware of changes in the industry as Cam Sproule was when he advocated improvements in what was then the Association of Professional Engineers of Alberta (now APEGA). Their reputation as knowledgeable consultants gives them a strong foundation on which to continue a tradition of leadership in oil and gas.
