About SJG Weert
SJG Weert stands for solidarity. As a regional hospital, they have a network like no other: in the house they know each other through and through and we work above the walls of the outpatient clinics and departments. This makes it possible to treat patients based on their personal situation and an integrated approach, instead of on the basis of one condition or treatment. They provide care across the board, with special attention to frail elderly and oncology. And is specialized care required that they do not have in-house? Then they make use of their extensive network of care partners. They know how to find the best specialists for you for every expertise. Simply because they know each other and pay attention to you.
History of SJG Weert
In 2019 it was 150 years ago that the St. Jans Gasthuis was created. At the historic moment of its foundation, a private initiative was implemented and focused on caring for the needy fellow man. This expression of charity has been important for the development of health care in this region. After 1869, scientific and technical developments, supported by general societal changes, led to a professional approach to the care of patients and residents.
Help for the poor
At the beginning of the establishment of the hospital, the population was quite poor. Yet there were better-off people who donated their money or goods to the church. In 1868, thanks to these gifts, a building in the Beekstraat could be taken into use. Three sisters of love from Tilburg started taking in three sick here in 1869. It would be several more years before medical care was introduced. This was due to a lack of trained personnel and expertise among the then surgeons and midwives of the countryside. After all, most physicians had no academic training yet. This only changed at the end of the 19th century.
