Suas Educational Development is a movement dedicated to supporting high quality education in targeted under-resourced communities, with programmes in India, Ireland and Kenya.
Founded in 2002, Suas has grown quickly to become a leading mid-size organisation in development within Ireland.
They promote quality education for all by providing short-term volunteers, financial and technical support to their Partner schools in India & Kenya. In Ireland they support young adults to engage with social change through service-learning programmes, thereby developing their team and leadership skills. They are also developing a mentoring programme and a new educational model for Transition Year students to provide project and team-based approach to learning. The Suas network also includes 7 college student societies and the alumni network.
They view education as key to social transformation – change education and you change the world. Key issues are not just about access but also quality – helping children and young people to go beyond the 3Rs (reading, writing, arithmetic) to realising their full potential to enable them to positively shape their futures and that of their communities and countries.
Suas has provided children in disadvantaged communities the opportunity of a quality education and the potential to improve their chances in life. Their programs impact the quality of education that these children access as we work with our Partners to provide the children themselves and their teachers with supports that improve reading skills as a means to increase their interest in learning and education. The children then become able to see a wider range of roles or jobs that they can consider as they grow up, opening up the chance to move out of the poverty trap that they and their families are currently in.
