The Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) was established under the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171) under Section 4. Prior to being declared MPSJ, it was known as the Petaling District Council. In 1994, the Selangor State Government had decided to upgrade Petaling District Council to the Subang Jaya Municipal Council.
The purpose of this upgrade is to restructure the administrative organizations to cope with the stress of physical, social, economic and environmental conservation development.Through the State Government Gazette of Selangor No. 62, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council was gazetted on January 02, 1997 according to a news plan of 1192 with a land tenure of 16,180 hectares and divided into seven (7) Planning Blocks according to the Local Plan of Subang Jaya 2020 Municipal Council (RTMPSJ 2020) namely:
