EVOLUTION AND DEVELOPMENT:
The first observation station was established in 1890 in Suakin on the Red Sea coast. In 1891, the Wadi Halfa station was opened. By 1900, there were seven operating stations, up to sixteen in 1920. In 1956, Sudan became a full member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Meteorology continued to be in the interest of Postal and Lightning until 1966, The meteorological survey during the eighties was a major development as the network of stations expanded and supported the latest equipment such as electronic devices to monitor the upper atmosphere and the establishment of a network to monitor thunderstorms radar and take pictures of satellites and the establishment of a Of wireless communications to link stations in Khartoum and linking Khartoum with the outside world. In 1995, it was approved to be transferred to a public body, and its responsibilities and responsibilities were determined. It followed the Ministry of Aviation and Survey and was attached to the Ministry of Science and Technology. Currently the General Meteorological Authority is one of the bodies of the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Urban Development.
CONSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK:
The Council of Ministers approved the establishment of the General Meteorological Authority for the year 2007 at its 7th session on the thirtieth day of the month of Muharram 1428H corresponding to the 18th of February 2007 with the certificate and signature of the President of the Republic HE Mr. Al-Mashir Omar Hassan Ahmed Al-Bashir. The establishment order shall specify the functions, purposes and terms of reference of the General Meteorological Authority.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE:
To rehabilitate and modernize the Commission and to build the capacity of its human cadres to absorb technological developments in the fields of monitoring and forecasting and to develop marketing and investment mechanisms to ensure the recovery of the operating cost and the creation of an internal working environment and the building of external cooperation relations to employ information, data and expectations to ensure the safety of life and property.
SPECIAL OBJECTIVES:
Maintain and update the monitoring network at the horizontal and vertical level and update the communications network to cover most parts of the country especially remote areas that have not installed monitoring stations. Maintain the ISO 9001-2008 certificate in ensuring the safety of air navigation in accordance with international quality standards and laws. Capacity building and training to keep pace with the expansion of the monitoring network and adoption of technology. Modernization of the workforce with its various segments (specialists, supervisors, technicians, engineers), strengthening relations and building companies with institutions related to the services of the General Meteorological Authority. Contributing to the implementation of the policies, plans and programs of the State in the development, Natural legacy.
