Sustainable development means improvement in the living conditions of the present generation without compromising the resources of future generations. In fact, it is a struggle towards achieving a good present for a better tomorrow; it is leaving a better legacy by value addition and without compromising on future resources; it is growing together for multiplying the happiness of living beings across the globe; and it is a thinking of prosperity beyond frontiers and generations.

Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) is the apex coordinating arm of the Planning and Development Department (P&D Department), Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for multi-sectoral development projects. Mandated with the task of striving for sustainable development, SDU plays an instrumental role in extending technical support and building capacity of SDU coordinated projects. SDU has a bright past regarding handling of complex projects including multiple development partners, i.e donors, NGOs, communities, federal and provincial governments. Over a period of time SDU has grown up with the technical assistance of development partners of P&D Department including UNDP, SDC, ADB, USAID/INL, GIZ, ILO, FAO and etc.

On the policy front, SDU has recommended from time to time useful policy inputs to Planning and Development Department for effective policy formulation. It has got the capacity to design future programs and project, pilot, coordinate, manage and implement new ideas. Introducing innovations and carrying out research activities & surveys, development of synergies, collaboration and networking of civil society on community-driven development, social mobilization and community development in project areasare the strengths of SDU.
