The Board of Governors at the University of Alberta is a corporation with the name "The Governors of the University of Alberta." It consists of a Chairman appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council, the Chancellor, the President and eighteen other persons appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor in Council, representing alumni, students, staff, and the general public.

The conduct, management, and control of the University and all its property, revenue, business, and affairs are vested in the Board. The Board appoints the President, deans of all faculties, all members of the teaching staff, the Librarian, the Registrar, and all members of the administrative staff, but no one may be appointed to a senior administrative post or to the academic staff of the University unless nominated by the President of the University.

The Board provides for the maintenance of buildings and the erection of new buildings. It has the authority to purchase and acquire such property as it may deem necessary for the purposes of the University. It fixes the various fees charged in connection with university courses and its makes financial provision for the establishment of new faculties, departments, and courses. It may establish arrangements designed to contribute to the educational and cultural advancement of the people of Alberta at large.
