Introduction
The Hunger Project (THP) is a strategic, global, nonprofit organization committed to sustainably ending world hunger . Across 12 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, we work to end hunger and poverty by empowering rural people, especially women, to lead self-sufficient lives, meet their basic needs, and build a better future for their children.
For more than 30 years, THP has made bold and innovative contributions to the global effort to end hunger. Our commitment to ending hunger is not a mere formula. It is the strategic intent that shapes us, forcing us to continually learn, evolve and reinvent ourselves.
In addition to our commitment and strategic methodology, the element that makes The Hunger Project unique is its focus on the human component of hunger .
It is not because of a lack of food production, or a new distribution system, or technology or finance, that hunger persists. Hunger persists because people living in poverty lack the opportunity to meet their most basic human needs . No matter how hard they work, they have no access to the means, no knowledge, no voice in decision-making, and no freedom of action to end their own hunger.
Social laws and traditions prevent people from having self-confidence. Aid programs are often inadvertently organized to reinforce the dependency, inequality, and even corruption that give rise to hunger. These are the issues that must be resolved to end hunger, and these are the issues that The Hunger Project addresses.
At The Hunger Project we recognize that hungry people are not the problem, they are the solution . They are courageous human beings who use their creativity, skills and resources every day, striving to build lives of dignity and self-reliance.
Accordingly, investors in The Hunger Project do not give handouts. At The Hunger Project we view the people in the communities working to end hunger, the investors who give their money to develop people's skills, the volunteers who invest their time and talent, and our staff as equal partners . Partners in creating a new future, a “future free from hunger,” a global community that unleashes the human spirit to a new level of integrity, contribution, and harmony with all people and with nature.
Vision: A world where every woman, man, girl and boy leads a healthy, fulfilled life of self-sufficiency and dignity.
Mission: To eradicate hunger and poverty by driving pioneering, sustainable, grassroots, women-centered strategies and advocating for their widespread adoption in countries around the world.
