The formation of INECOL arose around the interest in developing research on the use of natural resources, conservation and biodiversity in Mexico. In turn, this interest arose from the need for basic studies and scientifically-based answers to solve the ecological problems derived from the use of natural resources. This position has brought together an important body of experiences and is still in force today. With this, it seeks to support with solid foundations the establishment of adequate policies and mechanisms to continue and promote the development of the country, avoiding as much as possible the impact on the environment and the biological wealth of ecosystems, which condition the quality of life and the welfare of the population.

Generate, transfer and socialize frontier scientific and technological knowledge on ecology and biological diversity for the benefit of society, contributing to the innovative solution of environmental, agricultural and forestry problems. To train new talents for science and technology as well as professionals of excellence, and offer highly specialized professional services in the field of ecology.

To be the research center of international reference in the study, conservation and management of natural heritage, with the capacity to respond to the challenges of global environmental change and sustainable development.
