The Syria Civil Defense (The White Helmets) was founded in 2013 in Syria by a diverse group of volunteers. The aim was to respond to aerial and land bombings and reduce the gap left by the Syrian regime’s withdrawal of basic government service like firefighting and healthcare.
Their group of volunteers has expanded to 3300 female and male volunteers, operating in all areas they can access. Their volunteers strive to save civilian lives and help their communities recover from the impact of the war. They have managed to save more than 128,000 people so far and lost 308 volunteers, most of them victims in double-tap attacks while they rescuing civilians from under the rubble.
