About

Millicom Ghana Limited (Tigo) is a mobile telecommunication services provider, which was established in Ghana in 1991, as one of the subsidiaries of Millicom International Cellular SA based in Luxembourg. MIC has 13 operations in emerging markets of Africa and Latin America.

Millicom Ghana started operating a mobile cellular network on the ETACS Analogue System with the brand name Mobitel. Mobitel then had over 27,000 subscribers who used their mobile phones and other auxiliary equipment in mainly the regional capitals of Accra, Tema, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi and Tamale.

Mobitel then offered two basic services namely;

    • Prepaid services (STARCALL) which used recharged cards (Easy Pay Card) to top-up or recharge accounts.
    • Postpaid (Call Plan) which offered variety tariff packages depending on the customers usage or choice.
    • In addition to these, the company had International Roaming services

Mobitel was later rebranded Buzz GSM in 2003, when Millicom Ghana migrated from Analogue to the GSM platform. In 2006, the brand became Tigo, to reflect the standard brand name across the Millicom group.

Our vision is to provide people in emerging markets the freedom to access today’s world. To make this happen, we create ‘a world where mobile services are AFFORDABLE, ACCESSIBLE and AVAILABLE everywhere and to all’.

In May 2009, we reached the 3 million-subscriber mark in Ghana. Our brand has exhibited strength in the areas of product innovation and network quality. Products such as Tigo Number 1, Smartalk and Xtreme have built a value-for-money image for our brand in recent times.
