Trama Tecnoambiental (TTA)
Trama TecnoAmbiental (TTA), founded in 1986 and based in Barcelona, Spain, is an international consulting and engineering company that specializes in distributed generation through renewable energy sources, energy management and efficiency, rural electrification and self-generation through distributed micro-generation, integration of renewables in buildings and sustainable architecture, as well as, specialized training and education and technological development.
Since its establishment, TTA has focused all its efforts on changing the way energy is used, through substituting fossil and nuclear fuels with renewable energy, transforming the design criteria of buildings to promote energy independence, and making universal access to electricity possible in the most disadvantaged areas.
Over the years TTA has been at the forefront of the renewable energy sector and through its leadership has contributed to the creation of a favourable environment for clean electricity generation.
In Spain, TTA carried out some of the first bioclimatic architectural projects, promoted the first photovoltaic rural electrification programmes, designed the first centralized hot water and heating systems with individual energy meters and solar backup, designed the first large building with a façade-integrated photovoltaic system, planned the first grid-connected photovoltaic installations and helped to reduce electricity companies’ reluctance to receive and pay for distributed renewable-based electricity.
The first rural electrification projects to use photovoltaic technology were carried out in the context of research and development projects funded by the European Commission and Spanish institutions. These programmes were developed in remote mountainous regions of Spain. During this period TTA has developed its own technology for electricity management, regulation and transformation, adapted to individual and collective installations.
The experience acquired from these projects was later applied internationally, in projects funded and supported by the ICAEN (Catalan Energy Institute), the AECID (Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation), EuropeAid and the World Bank, among others.
Today, TTA has solid international experience, having carried out numerous projects in most regions of the world including Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Oceania and, more recently, in Asia. A highlight of TTA’s international cooperation experience was one of the first projects implemented in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, which involved the electrification of Floreana island using renewable energy sources (solar photovoltaic and wind), both in the main village (hybrid solar microgrid) and in isolated households.
With regard to technology development, Trama TecnoAmbiental won the EUREC Agency’s technology prize for “developing excellent system technology for rural electrification based on renewable energy sources, combined with an innovative, user-oriented approach for its implementation.” TTA is also the holder of Spanish and European patents.
