Transilvania University (UTBv) is a state institution of higher education located in Brasov, Romania, and by its "educational offer, scientific research and number of students represents one of Romania's large universities, being the representative university for Region 7 - Centre." The University includes 18 faculties with a total of about 20 000 de students and 800 teaching staff. The University offers 100 FT, PT and distance learning bachelor's study programmes and 66 advanced studies or scientific reasearch master's programmes, also FT, PT and distance learning. At present doctoral studies are available in 17 fields.
Mission
Transilvania University of Brasov is an accredited state higher-education institution established by Decree no.175/1984 and Ministerial Decision no.263327/1948 under the name The Silviculture Institute of Brasov. The institution acquired its current name following Order no. 4894/23.03.1991 of the Minister of Education and Science.
Transilvania University of Brasov aims at training highly qualified specialists in the fields of fundamental sciences, technology, economics, law, sociology, arts and medical science as well as at providing knowledge and services for society. Thus, Transilvania University ensures and develops the resources and instruments necessary for educational and scientific research processes at a level which meets the requirements of The European Space for Higher Education and Research as defined by The Bologna, Copenhagen and Lisbon Declarations and promoted by The National Strategy for Higher Education in Romania.
History
The beginning and development of higher education in Brasov originate in the old cultural traditions and intense cultural climate of the city. Here the well known technical and scientific engineering activity, the artistic creation in the fields of folkloric literature and culture, as well as the intensive studies in the numerous schools of all levels, blend in perfect harmony. |
Among the most important landmarks of the beginning and development of this cultural centre we mention the first Romanian School from Scheii Brasovului set up five centuries ago, the first printings in Romanian of Deacon Coresi, Johannes Honterus German School, the activity of keeping the national spirit alive led by the well known man of letters George Baritiu and Transilvania Newspaper he founded, Astra cultural association having a leading role in shaping our national consciousness, the first Romanian school of trade as well as the contributions of some personalities such as Andrei Muresanu, Gheorghe Dima, Iacob Muresanu, Octavian Goga, St O Iosif, Sextil Puscariu, Valeriu Braniste, Tiberiu Bradiceanu, Ilie Cristea and others. |
