The United States Consulate General Juba opened in 2005. It was transformed into an Embassy at midnight on July 9, 2011 when the Republic of South Sudan became Independent. It is also the headquarters for the U.S. Agency for International Development mission in Juba. The United States Embassy in Juba is located in Juba Na Bari also know as TongPing, North of the Ministries complex next to the European Union compound.

The United States recognized South Sudan as a sovereign, independent state on July 9, 2011 following its secession from Sudan. The United States played a key role in helping create the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that laid the groundwork for the 2011 referendum on self-determination, through which the people of South Sudan overwhelmingly voted for independence.
