Policy and History

The United States was one of the first countries to recognize Uzbekistan as an independent nation twenty-five years ago. Since then, the U.S. and Uzbekistan have cooperated on many important state and societal issues, including rule of law, defense, civil society, education, and health care. The U.S. Embassy in Tashkent is committed to working with Uzbekistan in these and other areas.

U.S. Recognition of Uzbekistan, 1991.
The United States recognized Uzbekistan’s independence on December 25, 1991, when President George H.W. Bush announced the decision in an address to the nation regarding the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Uzbekistan previously had been a constituent republic of the USSR.

Diplomatic relations were established on February 19, 1992, when President George H.W. Bush announced the decision in a press statement.

Establishment of the American Embassy in Tashkent, 1992.
The American Embassy in Tashkent was established March 16, 1992, with Michael Mozur as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim.
