The Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) is a non-profit making Pan-African organization that aims to promote the scientific study of population and the application of research evidence in development planning in Africa. UAPS was established through the initiative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) by the Third General Conference of African Demographers, Statisticians and Planners held in Addis Ababa in March 1984.

Vision: To be the pre-eminent resource in population research for scholars and policy makers in Africa.

Mission: To contribute to the development of Africa by enhancing networking and capacities of professionals to generate, communicate, and use evidence-based information on population.

Objectives: The main objective of UAPS is to promote research and the utilization of findings to improve policies and programs on population and development in Africa. The specific objectives of the Union are to:

Support the training of the next generation of researchers;
Link scholars for knowledge sharing through various forms of networking;
Promote evidence based policies and programs;
Promote dialogue between population and development experts and policy makers; and
Foster the visibility of scientific research on African population
