Present in Benin since 1979, the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF (created by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 1946) is developing a five-year cooperation program with the government. Through its successive cooperation programs, the organization has contributed to several results for the children of Benin.
In the field of health: The reduction of mortality of children under 5 from 178 per 1000 live births in 1990 to 96 per 1000 in 2018; elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus since 2010; reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV from 14 percent in 2008 to 6.7 percent in 2016; and the elimination of poliomyelitis by 2015.
In the field of education: A large number of children have access to basic education allowing Benin to significantly improve the net primary school enrollment rate estimated at 65 percent and to reduce inequalities of access between girls and boys with an estimated parity of 0.91 to date according to the DHS.
In the area of ​​protection: The child labor rate decreased from 52 percent in 2014 to 33 percent in 2017. 86 percent in 2017. Overall, the child protection system in Benin has made major progress with, among other things, the vote and promulgation of the Children's Code at the end of 2016.
