Present in some 170 countries and territories, UNDP helps eradicate poverty, reduce inequality and exclusion, and build greater resilience so that countries continue to progress. As the lead development agency of the United Nations, UNDP plays a vital role in supporting countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

As part of its support for the development process in Burkina Faso, UNDP formulated in January 2018 with the Government of Burkina Faso, a cooperation program for the period 2018-2020 which has been extended until 2022. In the As part of this extension, some readjustments were made to certain products to take into account the results already achieved and the contextual evolution marked mainly by the deterioration of the security situation. Thus, the 2018-2022 country cooperation program which reflects UNDP's contribution to the implementation of the National Economic and Social Development Plan (PNDES) remains focused on the following three pillars:

1. Institutional efficiency, rule of law, social cohesion and security.

Objectives: Improve institutional effectiveness, the rule of law, and social cohesion to ensure peace and security for the entire population.

Key areas: (i) Decentralization and local governance; (ii) Rule of Law, Security and Social Cohesion; (iii) Electoral assistance; (iv) Economic governance.

2. Inclusive and sustainable growth, decent work and food security.

Objectives: To make growth inclusive and sustainable, and to promote the creation of decent jobs and food security for all.

Key areas: (i) Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change; (ii) Preservation of Biodiversity; (iii) Promotion of new and renewable energies; (iv) Promotion of the green economy.

3. Resilience to climate change, natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies.

Objectives: Make communities and institutions more resilient; able to anticipate, adapt and respond to shocks and stress, take charge of their own development, ensuring rights, dignity and inclusion.

Key areas: (i) Prevention, management and recovery of disasters and humanitarian crises; (ii) Promotion of entrepreneurship and youth employment; (iii) Prevention of radicalization and violent extremism; (iv) Support for the stabilization of insecure areas.

About twenty projects are implemented for the operationalization of the 2018-2022 country cooperation program, sixteen (16) of which are active in several regions of the country. Some projects were closed during the year and others are being formulated.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has been active in Burkina Faso since 1966. Its presence is defined by a Basic Agreement signed on July 19, 1976 which sets out the basic conditions under which UNDP supports Burkina Faso in the implementation of its development programs.
