For more than 65 years, we have been leading and coordinating aid activities around the world. These initiatives are aimed at protecting asylum seekers and seeking solutions to the refugee problem.
UNHCR was established on 14 December 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The mission of the agency is to ensure the international protection of refugees and seek solutions to this problem on a global scale.
In the short term, they strive to guarantee the rights and well-being of refugees. In the long term, their goal is to help them return to their home country when the situation becomes favorable. If this is not possible, UNHCR provides support for their integration into the host country or their resettlement in another country. UNHCR also provides assistance to stateless persons.
UNHCR Belgium: Protecting and promoting societal support
The UNHCR Representation for Belgium and Luxembourg is located in Brussels and is a component of UNHCR's Regional Representation for Western Europe. They guarantee the respect of the principles of refugee protection in Belgian law and asylum procedures, and ensure their daily implementation. Together with the authorities, they are working to resettle refugees in Belgium from their first host country. They are also active in promoting public support for asylum seekers, refugees and UNHCR's work around the world through campaigns and fundraising from public and private donors.
