The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) started its programme of support to Thailand in 1971. Over the past years, UNFPA has worked with the Royal Thai Government, non-governmental organizations, academia and civil society in advancing the goals of the International Conference of Population Development (ICPD) in Thailand - focusing on promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights for young people especially vulnerable youth groups; supporting ending preventable maternal deaths through the South-South and Triangular Cooperation and providing evidence-based policies to effectively prepare and respond to the demographic change and population ageing.
The current UNFPA Thailand 11th Country Programme (2017-2021) is in line with The United Nations Partnership Framework (2017-2021) and the 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2017-2021) of Thailand and international normative standards, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The programme was formulated through a consultative process, involving the Government, civil society, the private sector and other development partners. As an overarching approach to addressing inequality, the programme targets disadvantaged and vulnerable populations, and focuses on adolescents and youth, while strategies to address gender inequalities are integrated across the programme. Policy engagement and advocacy are key programme strategies, along with the development of a robust resource mobilization strategy targeting the corporate sector and the general public.
