The National University of San Marcos, Dean of America, founded on May 12, 1551, was the beginning of the university history of the continent. The Dominicans in their convents of Cusco, the main Peruvian city in the sixteenth century, and Lima, studied Arts and Theology to exercise the old members and prepare the novices of the Order. The increase of higher studies determined that, in the chapter of the famous convent of Cusco (01/07/1548), Fray Tomás de San Martín requested to found a university or General Study in Lima or also called City of the Kings.

From the twentieth century, with the specialization of knowledge, many careers became independent and motivated the creation of various Faculties, to the point that currently the Dean of America has 62 careers (corresponding to five academic areas) distributed in 20 Faculties.
