The National University Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza de Amazonas (UNTRM) was created by Law No. 27347 of September 18, 2000 and began its academic activities in June 2001, thanks to Resolution No. 114 of Operation Authorization issued by CONAFU dated May 25, 2001.
Since its creation, until December 8, 2009, the University has been administered and governed by 5 commissions appointed by CONAFU.
On December 8, 2009, it held its Academic Swearing-In Ceremony for the newly elected authorities, CONAFU grants by resolution No. 627-2009 dated November 27, 2009, the Definitive Authorization for University Operation, thereby acquiring its autonomy and passing to join as a member of the National Assembly of Rectors with all the prerogatives granted by the University Law.
Indeed, on November 21, 2009, the date on which the Anniversary of Political Creation of the Department of Amazonas is also celebrated and CONAFU convened, the University Assembly elected the first authorities of the UNTRM, which were recognized by Resolution No. 598-2009-CONAFU dated November 24, 2009.
With the adoption of the New University Law, Law No. 30220, the UNTRM was the first public university to start its implementation and adaptation, thus forming its Statutory Assembly, the same one that appointed the Electoral Committee to call elections to elect the new authorities of the UNTRM.
On September 17, 2017, the RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS No. 033-2017-SUNEDU / CD was published in the Official Gazette of El Peruano, through which the National Superintendency of Higher University Education grants the Institutional License to the National Toribio University Rodríguez de Mendoza de Amazonas, to offer the university higher educational service, thus becoming the third public university to receive a license.
Currently the UNTRM has as authorities the professors Dr. Policarpio Chauca Valqui as Rector, Dr. Miguel Ángel Barrena Gurbillón as Academic Vice-Rector and Dr. Flor Teresa García Huamán as Vice-Rector for Research, who were recognized by University Assembly Resolution No. 004- 2017-UNTRM / AU.
The University Campus of approximately 17 hectares and located in the Higos Urco neighborhood of the city of Chachapoyas, has to date a modern infrastructure dedicated to academic, research and central administration activities. It also has 2 large houses located in the urban area of the city, where the University began its operations.
