Young University, created in 1991 as part of the University 2000 plan, the University of Marne-la-Vallée is a public institution with a cultural, scientific and professional character.
She took a new denomination in 2007 and became University Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, following the creation of the University Paris-Est (formerly PRES and since July 22, 2013 Community of Universities and Institutions) of which she is member .
In 2013, on the occasion of a change of visual identity, Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée University acquired the acronym UPEM and kept its name University Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée.
The Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée University has passed the expanded responsibilities and powers at 1 st January 2009.
It is mainly located in the New Town of Marne-la-Vallée, in the Cité Descartes, in an area where local authorities work for controlled urban development while preserving the wealth of heritage and natural spaces.
Since its creation, Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée University has distinguished itself by a culture of innovation by developing close partnerships both in terms of training and research with the economic world, but also by opting for a type of original governance.
In 2017, the FUTURE project of Université Paris-Est won the I-SITE label for the Investissements d'Avenir program.
Location
The head office of the University Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée is located on the Cité Descartes, in Champs-sur-Marne 15 kms from Paris, and the University is also located in Meaux and Serris.
The 13 buildings that make up the University's heritage total approximately 83,800 m² and are intended for teaching, scientific and administrative purposes.
Missions and strategies
Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée University is a multidisciplinary institution with 12 components, including one IUT and 15 research units.
It pursues the public service missions incumbent upon it by focusing particularly on two major objectives: qualifying professional integration and the development of research excellence.
In addition, it maintains close collaborations and relations, at European and international level, in the fields of training, student mobility and research.
A qualifying training policy
The Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée University offers more than 220 degree courses including 90 degrees open to apprenticeship and counts more than 2,300 apprentices, ranking on this point as the 1st French university.
The development of a research of excellence
The Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée University structures its research policy within the perimeter of Paris-Est University in close consultation with the member institutions.
It counts 15 recognized research units (including 4 UMR CNRS and 1 UMR IFSTTAR) which participate in 5 of the doctoral schools developed by Université Paris-Est.
The partnership research on Paris-Est University Marne-la-Vallée is particularly active and relies on the ADVANCITY, SYSTEM @ TIC and CAP DIGITAL competitiveness clusters, as well as on the Carnot VITRES Institute.
Numbers
After strong growth (+ 37%) between 1999 and 2004, student numbers at Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée University stabilized in 2005 at 11,000 annual enrollments, of which more than 65% were under license. In September 2016, the UPEM welcomes 12,000 students, an increase of 4% over the previous year.
The number of staff at the Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée University amounts to 981, including 526 teaching-researcher and teacher jobs.
