Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman realized the importance of quality higher education to build a knowledge-based economy in Bangladesh. For that purpose, Bangladesh University Grants Commission was established on 16 December 1972, which was subsequently chartered as the highest autonomous institution of higher education in 1973 through Presidential Order No. 10. At that time the function of UGC was to assess the financial needs and demands of the then six universities. As the scope of higher education in Bangladesh has expanded over time, the activities of the UGC are: providing necessary allocations to government universities, providing support for the development of the higher education system in Bangladesh with the aim of improving the quality of high-level teaching and learning methods, encouraging the most innovative research and development, Development of good governance issues in universities. Moreover, they formulate policies related to UGC Higher Education Policy and quality assurance to reach international standards and advising the Government accordingly.
