The University of Buenos Aires (UBA) was inaugurated 12 August, 1821 by the initiative of Bernardino Rivadavia - at the time Ministry of Government of Buenos Aires. Since then, the institution has followed, first as a provincial and then -since 1881- as a national University, the course that the country and city's history have taken. The institution has also gone along paths that contributed to its growth as a cultural and scientific academic centre and a place for the training of professionals, circulation and production of knowledge.
OUR WORK
Science and Technology
Within the area of science and technology, the University of Buenos Aires has an outstanding structure made up of around 6000 researchers and scholars and over 1500 ongoing research projects financed by the University, the ANPCyT, the CONICET, and other organizations. This structure is a substantial part of the national scientific body and, as such, has a role of utmost importance in a period of growing scientific and technological demands.
The research projects which are being carried out embrace diverse areas, and the human and technical qualifications involved in their execution represent one of the most important heritages of the institution. In order to preserve and develop such qualifications, the Superior Board of the UBA has approved the scientific program UBACyT 2008-10 which will be running as from the beginning of next year and which includes three project categories: groups trained people; groups of people in training; and young researchers. The intermediate category was designed bearing two objectives in mind: ensuring the necessary upgrade of this activity so as to provide alternatives to young researchers; and allowing experienced teachers to face scientific activities within their framework. Applicants to MA's and PhD's scholarships have been summoned in order to nurture these projects with new researchers and to ensure continuity in the training of human resources.
Extension Programs and Projects
The bonds that the UBA holds with the community are inherent to its main mission - training professionals is a long-term commitment with the society, as well as carrying out research in order to improve the human and social life quality.
Nevertheless, among the three main cornerstones of our University - teaching, research and extension- the University Statute assigns to the extension department the role of creating a sphere to establish a direct relationship with different areas and social entities, and a nexus between teaching and research.
In Argentina's complex social and economic environment, the academic community offers - through the university extension department- integral support to the creation of new social practices in an interdisciplinary job that gets enriched with the specificity of knowledge that each academic area contributes.
