About

University of California--Santa Barbara is a public institution that was founded in 1909. It has a total enrollment of 23,051 staudents, its setting is suburban, and the campus size is 1,055 acres on the California coast. To date, the university has 2,403 academic staff and about 6,268 total staff.

 

Academic Departments

UCSB encompasses five schools and colleges, the largest of which is the College of Letters and Science, serving undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate programs at UCSB include the highly ranked College of Engineering. The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education and Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management are other notable graduate schools at UCSB. Undergraduate students can apply for admissions into the College of Creative Studies, which emphasizes focused studies in one of eight disciplines: art, biology, chemistry and biochemistry, computer science, literature, mathematics, music composition or physics. Musician Jack Johnson and actor Michael Douglas both graduated from UCSB.

 

Office of Research

The University of California's fundamental missions are teaching, research, and public service. The goal of the Office of Research is to promote outstanding research at UC Santa Barbara.

 

The Office of Research helps the university community secure support for their research and creative activities. The department works with all academic units to promote research throughout the university, and they have special responsibility for research done collaboratively across disciplines, departments, and schools. They ensure the integrity of UCSB research and provide assurance to governmental and private funding agencies and to the public that the research is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical standards. They work to make sure that research is integrated with the educational and service missions of the university. Finally, they help communicate to the university community and to the general public about the quality, breadth, and significance of research carried out at UCSB.
