Research Focus Areas

The University of Pretoria focuses its research on areas of importance to developing nations, especially those of Africa and in the Global South. In this way it aims to increase the impact and international visibility of research at UP, and to concentrate resources where the greatest impact can be leveraged. Several strategies contribute to this overarching goal of UP.

Since 2012, the University has concentrated resources in a select number of institutional and faculty research themes, an overview of which is given here. In addition, the University has Centres of Excellence, Research Institutes and Units, Chairs that are part of the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI), and as a result of our strong partnerships with industry, Industry Chairs in a range of areas of research excellence.

Units, Centres and Institutes fulfil an important role within the structures of the University as these are spaces where research and academic expertise are consolidated and a critical mass established to present exceptional research and postgraduate training opportunities.
