The University of San Martín de Porres, traces its origins to the Pro-Deo Institute, a house dedicated to the cultivation of philosophy and theology that was founded by Dr. Vicente Sánchez Valer of the order of preachers (Dominicans). Shortly after Pope John XXIII raised to the altars Blessed Fray Martin de Porres Velasquez of the Dominican Order of Peru, the University was founded under the invocation of the new saint; on May 17, 1962.
The first Faculties were those of Education and Literature including the Institutes of Philosophy, Spanish, Literature, History, Geography and Journalism. The First Rector was the founder, RP Vicente Sánchez Valer. That was a time remembered with nostalgia for the founders due to the innovative spirit and growth that led them to incorporate the careers of Accounting Sciences, Economics, Administration, Law, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology and the Institutes of Industrial Relations and Cooperativism.
The seventies were marked by a great deal of activity in terms of infrastructure, such as the acquisition of the extensive campus of the University City in the then distant Santa Anita district. Later, the facilities for the Sociology and Social Work programs would be built. During the eighties, the University devoted itself to laying the foundations for its future development, training teachers and carefully developing its academic offer through curricular structures that responded to the needs of the country and its development.
The nineties were, without a doubt, years of fruitful development for the University of San Martín de Porres. The overflowing enthusiasm and commitment of its authorities and the university community, allowed to equip it with an infrastructure in accordance with its prestige. This is how the premises of the Faculties of Communication, Obstetrics and Odontology Sciences were built and, more recently, the modern premises of the Faculties of Medicine, Engineering and Architecture and Law and Political Science. The development of the University at this stage was aimed at developing an institution committed to research and knowledge construction. This commitment has made it the university institution that has invested the most in Information Technology with more than 10, 000 computers installed in 16 totally interconnected campuses. In these campuses we offer students and teachers the multiplicity of equipment they require for the development of their specialties. Thus, the School of Communication Sciences has two television studios, several digital edition islands, fifty professional TV cameras, Infographic Workshop, Newspaper Design and Design. In the Faculty of Human Medicine, the Genetics and Molecular Biology Laboratory stands out, dedicated to international studies. The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture has laboratories for image processing, geographic information systems, object-oriented technology and we develop innovative research projects on digital business and virtual education, an area in which several faculties participate and which had a a resounding success as more than one thousand doctors from all over the world participated in the first virtual refresher course offered by the Faculty of Human Medicine. The Faculties of Law and Political Science and the Administration and Industrial Relations, as well as the Economic and Financial Accounting Sciences offer free legal consultations and business consulting workshops to support the development of the Peruvian company.
In its more than 40 years of service to the community, the University of San Martín de Porres has achieved, by its own merit, a special place in the Peruvian educational system. It is currently a modern institution that has 9 faculties that offer eighteen professional careers, 1 school (12 postgraduate sections), 3 doctorates, more than thirty thousand students and 2,500 workers, between teachers and administrators. It is the largest university in Peru and ranks among the three best private universities in the country.
The infrastructure and organization achieved by the University allow it to meet the most demanding and diverse academic and administrative requirements of professors and students, as well as extracurricular activities aimed at providing comprehensive training, which was reflected in the accreditation of its Faculty of Human Medicine. , one of the first in Peru to obtain this recognition required by law.
Only in the last decade of the twentieth century, the University of San Martin de Porres graduated more than 40,000 professionals and contributed to universal culture by publishing more than two hundred books and sponsoring works as remarkable as the staging of the opera Aída in the Huaca Pucllana, a Latin American scoop. It should be noted that the University devotes significant resources to support more than three thousand distinguished students whose limited resources would not allow them to access quality university education. This aid is reflected in more than US $ 1,700,000 in scholarships awarded through our student welfare offices.
Having started the third millennium, the University has renewed its commitment to the development of the country by creating the first Government Institute, an institution of reflection and research that offers Master's degrees in Governance and International Business, which we are sure will lay the necessary foundations for the construction of a freer and fairer country.
Approaching the half century of existence, the University of San Martin de Porres looks to the future with optimism and with the confidence of having become a pillar of the development of Peru.
